VANCOUVER TO VANCOUVER REFERS TO THE FACT THAT MY OLDER SON, RAYHEND, LIVES IN VANCOUVER WASHINGTON AND WE VISIT HIM EVERY TWO YEARS TO DRIVE FROM HIS HOUSE THERE UP TO VANCOUVER BC CANADA. The drive itself will make for adventurous trips when the drive brings you to the Pacific Coast then to Olympia National Park then across Puget Sound on the ferry. It is quite memorable.

THE FIRST PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT THE KIA’PALANO AREA OF CAPILANO SUSPENSION BRIDGE PARK IN CANADA AND THE SECOND PHOTO IS FROM THE HALL OF MOSES IN THE OLYMPIA NATIONAL PARK IN WASHINGTON STATE.
Vancouver to Vancouver.
Now for the adventures:
One of our most adventurous car trips was from From Portland Oregon To Vancouver Canada. Backstory #2 The first photo here was taken at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in the area called Kia’palano This name is from the Squamish language and it means “beautiful river”. The totem poles are authentic, telling stories from Coast Salish and Haida traditions.
The second photo here is from the Hall of Moses within Olympia National Park in Washington state. It is a trail within Hoh Rainforest and it is one of the most popular trails of Olympia National Park. The trail is quite easy to hike. It is a loop trail so you will end up in the same area you started at.
Be Ready for some exhilarating experiences for the family:

Adventure travel is about pushing boundaries, both physically and mentally. Rock climbing offers the perfect blend of excitement and challenge as you find your way up vertical cliffs, testing your strength and determination. This is absolutely one of my favorite activities along with Climbing volcanoes. I got married in Sumatra Indonesia because of my love of climbing volcanoes. Meanwhile, zip-lining provides a breathtaking birds-eye view as you fly through lush canopies, experiencing the rush of the wind against your face. It is fun and most exhilarating. I do not have to go far to do this. A two hour drive will bring us to Red River NM where there is a wonderful zip-line dropping us through a rich mountainous canopy. It costs around US $100 to do this at Red River. It is a seated zip-line and it is called the Pioneer Flyer.
For those drawn to the water, river rafting is an exhilarating option. Paddling through rapid waters demands teamwork and quick reflexes. You’ll find a similar thrill in the world of skydiving and bungee jumping, where courage meets adrenaline in free fall that turns a simple jump into a lifetime memory. River rafting is really exhilarating on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Not only do you get the crazy excitement of dangerous looking rapids at times, but you also get some of the most incredible views and scenes in the world. Of course, you can choose easier rivers to engage with rafting or inner tubing, for families with young children. In Colorado, there are family rafting excursions on the Blue River and Clear Creek. I am sure there are family friendly river rafting guided tours on rivers throughout the world. I am personally familiar with only these mentioned above.
A more serene yet equally engaging experience awaits beneath the waves. Snorkeling introduces you to vibrant marine life and tranquil underwater landscapes, while scuba diving takes you deeper, offering a close encounter with the mysteries of the ocean. Snorkeling is great in the Cayman Islands This is the only place where I am familiar with the snorkeling but that is sufficient because there are many great snorkeling sites on the three islands there.
Each adventure pushes you to your limits, but it also invites reflection and growth. Whether you’re conquering a peak or splashing through a river, these physical challenges offer a unique blend of excitement and mental clarity. Embracing adventure travel promises not only an unforgettable journey but also a profound personal transformation.
Dive Deep into Diverse Cultures: Enriching Experiences
Travel isn’t just about landscapes and thrill-seeking—it’s also an incredible avenue for cultural immersion. Engaging directly with local cultures enhances the travel experience well beyond the typical tourist attractions. By participating in local festivals or ceremonies, you gain a firsthand understanding of traditions that have endured generations, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of a community’s identity.
Artisan workshops provide a unique way to learn about traditional crafts directly from those who have mastered them over lifetimes. Whether it’s weaving, pottery, or painting, the opportunity to connect with creators and hear their stories adds a personal touch to what might otherwise be just another souvenir.
Culinary exploration is another delightful way to experience culture. Joining food tours guided by locals reveals not only the flavors of a region but also its culinary history. Sharing meals creates connections, sparking conversations that bridge language and background gaps.
For those eager to leave a lasting impact, engaging in community projects ties travel with purpose. Working alongside residents on local initiatives fosters a sense of solidarity and offers deeper insights into the lifestyle and values of the destination.
The transformative power of these cultural experiences lies in the personal growth achieved through exposure and empathy. Travel with an open heart and mind, and you’ll return with more than just memories—ready to apply these learnings in your everyday life.

Reconnect with Nature: Unplug and Escape
Nature offers a respite like no other, especially for those seeking to unplug from the daily grind. There is nothing better than spending time around out of the way natural places to calm the mind. Vast national parks and preserved natural wonders are perfect for reconnecting with the environment on an adventure trip. Whether it’s the tranquility of a forest hike or the stark beauty of a desert landscape, these experiences allow an escape from screens and schedules. So, as you can see, I consider adventurous vacations as including relaxing time too, not just the excitement of exhilarating activities.
The concept of Shinrin yoku which is ‘forest bathing‘, originating in Japan, underscores the therapeutic effect of simply spending time in nature. Wandering through lush woods, you may find anxiety replaced with calm as the simple act of being present in the environment takes over. My favorite places are mountain tops and river banks but large, quiet parks are good too. It may be a bit difficult for some though because you have to spend some time WITHOUT YOUR MECHANICALS DEVICES. The Japanese have some favorite places like Takao Mountain and Todoroki Ravine Park (both of these are in Tokyo area) but I just like any nature hikes where I can find good places to relax.
There’s also the thrill of exploring national parks, whether you’re trekking across glacier-covered expanses or birdwatching in serene wetland reserves. These spaces aren’t just visually breathtaking—they also host rich ecosystems that highlight the interconnectedness of life. My favorite national park is Yellowstone National Park because of the volcanic activity there. Hikes on volcanos are very exhilarating (yes, Yellowstone IS a volcano.)My second favorite national park is Zion National Park because two of the most exhilarating and adventurous hikes in the world are there. These hikes are The Narrows and Angels Landing hikes.
For those inclined towards water-based adventures, kayaking through secluded bays or snorkeling alongside vibrant coral reefs offers peace interwoven with excitement. Engaging in such eco-friendly activities doesn’t just bolster an appreciation for nature; it often contributes to ongoing conservation efforts.
Nature’s ability to soothe the mind and refresh the spirit is profound. Every outdoor experience reinforces the understanding that while the world is vast, it’s something we are intimately part of, encouraging ongoing stewardship and care.
Sleep Beneath the Stars: Unusual and Unique Lodging
Finding the perfect place to rest after a day’s adventure can be an adventure in itself. For those eager to step outside of conventional hotels, the world is full of unique lodging options that turn accommodation into a memorable part of the journey. I cannot even count the amount of camping trips we have been on. We have gone through more tents than I can remember. We have also rented cabins on occasion. I have slept under the stars throughout the western USA, Canada, and Mexico. In the USA, we have the KOA Campgrounds and state and national parks. We have done it all. I have the KOA campgrounds catalog that lists several campgrounds in every state with the name of the campground, location, prices, and amenities. They also have a map of all their campgrounds on a KOA website.
Treehouses offer a playful reminder of childhood whimsy, allowing you to stay high above the ground among the treetops. These elevated retreats often provide stunning views and a comforting sway in the breeze, enhancing your connection with the surrounding environment.
Eco-lodges are ideal for travelers who prioritize sustainability. These accommodations are designed with the environment in mind, often using renewable energy sources and sustainable materials to minimize their footprint. Many eco-lodges are set in stunning natural locations, providing luxury and peace without sacrificing eco-conscious principles.
For a touch of nomadic simplicity, consider spending a night in a yurt or tipi. These traditional structures offer cozy warmth and comfort with a hint of rustic charm, letting you experience a way of living that has been practiced for centuries by cultures around the globe.
If underwater adventures captivated you during the day, why not continue the experience at night? Underwater hotels allow you to rest surrounded by the enchanting world of marine life, offering an unparalleled perspective into the mysteries of the deep.
Choosing locally-owned accommodations not only enriches your travel experience but also supports local economies. Such choices ensure that your adventure positively impacts the communities you visit, allowing for authentic connections and newfound friendships during your stay.
Family Adventure: Building Confidence to Take the Leap
Family adventure travel is more than just a getaway; it’s an opportunity to bond through shared experiences that challenge and inspire. Every family member, regardless of age, can find joy and thrill in a well-planned adventure trip.
Crafting a family-friendly itinerary involves considering everyone’s interests and activity levels, ensuring that each day holds excitement for each family member. Whether it’s exploring scenic nature trails, embarking on wildlife safaris, or engaging in hands-on cultural activities, there are countless ways to engage children and adults alike.
Safety is paramount when traveling with family. Prioritizing reputable tour operators and ensuring all activities are age-appropriate can make adventures both thrilling and safe. It’s often surprising how much kids thrive when given the chance to step outside their comfort zones under careful supervision.
These adventures create lasting memories that forge stronger family bonds. There’s an irreplaceable value in recalling shared triumphs and laughter long after the trip has ended. Kids gain confidence as they learn new skills and face new challenges, often returning home with a brave new outlook on the world around them.
Beyond just travel, adventure trips foster independence and resilience in children. Parents often witness a newfound confidence in their kids, knowing they can tackle more than they initially thought possible.
Common Questions Answered: Making Adventure Travel Accessible
Adventure travel can seem daunting, especially for families new to the idea, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Many affordable options allow thrill-seekers to enjoy meaningful experiences without stretching finances. Opting for off-peak travel times, exploring nearby destinations, or choosing budget-friendly activities can make a significant difference.
Safety is a top concern, and rightly so. Reputable companies specialize in adventure travel, prioritizing the well-being and security of their clients with experienced guides and appropriate safety gear. Researching the company’s track record and reading reviews can provide peace of mind that you’re in good hands.
For families with young children, age-appropriate itineraries ensure everyone enjoys the journey. Many adventure activities have family-friendly versions, allowing kids to safely participate in the excitement. This adaptability makes adventure travel accessible to families with kids of all ages.
Adventure isn’t limited to those at peak physical fitness. Trips can be tailored to match different fitness levels, ensuring everyone can participate at their own pace. Whether it’s choosing less strenuous routes or alternative activities, there’s always room for personalization to make sure everyone is included.
Mental preparation is key to overcoming any hesitations about adventure travel. Visualizing the experiences and focusing on the excitement ahead can transform apprehension into anticipation. Understanding the shared support within your group and relying on expert guides often boosts confidence, making the leap into the unknown a rewarding journey. All of that said, remember that:
“Adventure is a mindset, not a destination”.
(Quote from an anonymous person)
One of my most memorable adventures:
This photo was taken at River Kwai in Thailand. I was standing on the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai when I took this photo. It is known as the “Death Bridge” because it was built by the Japanese during World War II. The Japanese army used POWs and Asian slave laborers to build the bridge. The trains were transporting cargo into Myanmar to support the Japanese troops who were occupying Eastern Thailand, Myanmar, and China, and were preparing to invade India. Something like 100,000 POWs and slave laborers died while building the railway. When I visited, I rented a bike in Kanchanaburi and crossed the bridge on foot while walking the bike. After passing an area where elephants were kept, I rode the bike to a cave temple called Wat Tham Khao Pun which was used by the Japanese as a military hospital during World Way II. Anybody can visit the extensive cave complex (nine unique cave chambers have individual shrines with Buddha statues) from 0900 until 1930 everyday. On Sunday, it is actually open from 0730 until midnight. The entrance fee is 30 Bhat. The distance from Kanchanaburi to Wat Tham Khao Pun is about five miles or six kilometers. It made the bike ride exquisitely beautiful.

THIS PHOTO ABOVE WAS TAKEN AT THE REPTILE WORLD COMPOUND AT THE SINGAPORE ZOO. PICTURED HERE IS THE RESIDENT KOMODO DRAGON. THE KOMODO DRAGON IS LOOKING TO THE LEFT BECAUSE A ZOO KEEPER CALLED OUT ITS NAME AND IT IMMEDIATELY RAISED UP ITS HEAD AND LOOKED RIGHT AT WHERE THE ZOO KEEPER WAS WALKING. KOMODO DRAGONS ARE ENDEMIC TO SOUTHEAST INDONESIA. WE HAVE NOT VISITED KOMODO ISLAND BUT WE HAVE SEEN KOMODO DRAGONS AT THE ZOO IN JAKARTA. WE HAVE SPENT TIME IN ACEH TO VIST THE ORANGUTAN CONSERVATION CENTER THERE. NOW, VISITING THAT PLACE IS AN ADVENTURE INDEED. CLICK ON THE FOLLOWING LINK TO READ ABOUT OUR EXPERIENCES THERE;
Traveling through North Sumatra, actually through ALL of Sumatra, really is one of the most adventurous road trips you could experience.

Here are some FAQs about Adventure Vacation Planning:
Q: How can I find adventurous experiences that are safe?
- Research reputable tour providers, check reviews, and look for safety certifications or local guides with solid track records. Always ensure activities come with proper safety equipment and briefings. Trust Pilot is my go to platform for checking out tour guides and. TripAdvisor reviews are dependable.
Q: What are some budget-friendly ways to plan an adventure trip?
- Consider small group or self-guided tours to share costs, and be flexible with dates and destinations for the best deals. Choosing less touristy locations often means lower prices but similar levels of excitement
Q: Is it possible to have an exciting adventure without spending a lot?
- Yes! Many unforgettable activities, such as hiking, local food tours, or exploring natural landmarks, can be done cheaply or even for free. Opt for local eateries, public transportation, and free-entry destinations. I can give examples that are multifarious with just one word; VOLCANOES (my favorite).
Q: What should I budget for when planning an adventure vacation?
- Factor in travel, accommodation, activities, food, gear, and emergency funds. Use two budgets: an ideal spending plan and a maximum you’re willing to go. I always keep in mind my maximum spending limit which is at least US $5.50 above my ideal budget. (That is just a joke.) Basically I have to keep in mind how much of a credit card balance I am willing to rack up.
Q: How do I decide whether to travel solo or with a group?
- Solo travel offers flexibility and introspection but requires extra caution and planning for safety. Group trips can be safer and divide expenses, especially for guided activities and accommodation. I was always traveling solo on backpacking trips to Mexico, India, Italy, Southeast Asia, Canada, etc. until I met Farida and we started to build a family. Now group travel is very much the norm for us. The good thing is that our booked group tours are often just our family of three or four (when all of us can go).
Q: What gear do I need for my adventure, and can I save on equipment?
- Make a list of essentials and consider renting gear to save money. Rental shops often provide good quality equipment at affordable rates, particularly for outdoor sports and camping. If you really do want to buy your gear at discount prices, go to those excellent REI and Big Five Sporting Goods stores where discounts on prices are quite good. Surplus stores are also very good for this type of shopping. We have Surplus City here in Albuquerque NM and I am sure many other cities have similar shops.
Q: How do I keep costs lower for flights and hotels?
- Look for off-peak travel times, use flexible dates when booking, and compare prices across multiple platforms. Sometimes shifting your plan by a few days or exploring alternative destinations brings significant savings. TripAdvisor shows hotel prices up front and slashed prices are clearly shown. Hotel Tonight is good for inexpensive accommodations for quickly planned trips. I use Skyscanner for really cheap flights when I want to go to any new location within the next month or two.
Q: Are there package deals or all-inclusive options for adventure travel?
- Yes, all-inclusive packages can cover travel, accommodations, meals, and some activities, often leading to up-front savings and fewer financial surprises during the trip.
Q: What are the safest budget destinations for adventure vacations?
- Regions with established tourism infrastructure, such as Hungary, Costa Rica, or less popular cities in Europe, offer affordable daily budgets and well-developed safety measures for tourists. Costa Rica is very inexpensive and it has its lush rainforests waiting for you. Hungary has its Western Transdanubia region with its historic old-town districts of many cities and many grand castles to explore. A great example of less popular cities in Europe where great, inexpensive adventure travel can be experienced are in the Azores region of Portugal. These are islands in the mid-Atlantic with dramatic landscapes, whale watching, hiking, surfing, canoeing, and diving. In 2023, The Azores won the “Worlds’ Best Adventure Destination.”
- OK, that’s it for now. I will update this article as I discover new favorite adventures throughout the world. MAC

The section “Reconnect with Nature: Unplug and Escape” beautifully captures what so many travelers are craving today a true mental reset. The description of forest bathing and its calming effects really resonated with me. It’s powerful to be reminded that nature isn’t just a backdrop to our adventures, but a healing presence that re-centers us. I also appreciated the emphasis on eco-conscious activities like kayaking and snorkeling, which blend excitement with environmental respect. Have you come across specific destinations that excel at combining nature immersion with cultural engagement for a deeper travel experience?
Hello Marion. Thank you for the very nice comment. I especially think of the small village visits where I stay for a day or two longer than expected. That is when I most find immersion with nature and cultures because I am shown more favorite places of the locals. More cozy waterfalls or a second family household are examples. Anyway, before I start to ramble too long, Thank you again for the comment. MAC.
Even though I’m not able to travel myself because of a disability, reading through this kind of list still hits something deep. There’s a certain kind of freedom in these adventures like hiking remote trails, kayaking past glaciers ; that I can’t physically access, but I still feel connected to the idea of it. It’s not just about the thrill; it’s about pushing limits, reconnecting with something bigger, and stepping outside of routine. I might not get to experience these places firsthand, but I get why people chase them and honestly, just imagining them brings its own kind of escape.
Thank you for this comment. I do people who have never left their state or province where they were born and raised. My father, in fact, never traveled further than USA. He did move use from Hibbing Minnesota to Las Vegas Nevada and he never traveled after that. He was totally capable of going anywhere but he was AFRAID to travel, especially by plane. Anyway, you can travel in your heart and mind. I do that when I go someplace but can not see everything I wanted to see. When In get home, I watch YouTube videos from the attractions I missed and then say; “There, now I have been there too.” ???? Anyway, thank you for the nice comment. Mac.
This post captures the true spirit of adventure. Not just in the adrenaline rush, but in the way travel opens your eyes to history, culture, and connection. I like how you wove personal experiences with practical advice, especially the part about Thailand’s River Kwai and the lessons embedded in that journey. It’s a reminder that adventure isn’t only about thrill; it’s about meaning.
Have you ever thought about compiling your travel reflections into a book? You already write with the heart of one who’s lived every story twice. Once in the moment and once in memory.
John
Hello Mr Maluth, thank you so much for this comment. It made my day. I do have 20 or so journals that are kind of like my travel diaries. Maybe I SHOULD compile them together to make a travel book. There would be around 25 chapters or it might be better to write 3 books. One for Asia travels, one for Europe travels, and one for travels in the americas. That is a thought I must consider. Thank you again for the comment. MAC
