We were there just after the close of tourist season so it was quiet. It was easy to get rooms, it was easy to get seated in restaurants, it was easy to get served at coffee shops with no waiting. We even saw dear crossing the highway that passes through the town of Red River.

This zoo is a part of the huge Balboa Park which is a wonderful destination on its own. Many areas for the animals are open-air and cage less. This zoo has some 12,000 animals and is the largest in the USA. It is often cited as the best zoo in the world. It is right up there with my other favorite zoo which is the Singapore zoo. The safari park is in the San Pasqual Valley. There are more than 3,000 animals here and a large botanical garden with about one million plants.
